Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by black college women in America. AKA was founded at Howard University in 1908 ( Historic AKA Overview ) by nine Howard University students: Ethel Hedgeman, Beulah and Lillie Burke, Margaret F. Holmes, Marjorie Hill, Lucy Slowe, Marie W. Taylor, Anna E. Brown, and Lavinia Norman.
The Sorority was incorporated into a national organization and perpetual membership in 1913 by Nellie Quander and her associates: Norma Byrd and Minnie B. Smith.
Xi Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Region ,. Chartered September 10, 1983 with twenty-two members from the city of Fredericksburg and the surrounding counties of Caroline, King George, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Westmoreland, Xi Upsilon Omega operates in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Charter members include Vicky Adams, Inez Bacoats*, Ortygia Carnette, Phyllis Casey, Pearlie Coleman*, Emele Vulp, Bernice Edwards, Shirley Fluellen, Alberta Frye, Clintina Hankerson**, Barbara Harris**, Marian Harvey**, Debbie Hawkins, Frances Jenkins**, Maude Murchison*, Mary L. Preston**, Ola Smith, Pearl Smith**, Cassandra Terrell**, Joni Waller, Gladys West, and Charlotte Young*. (* denotes Ivies beyond the Wall; ** denotes active Xi Upsilon Omega charter members.)
One of Xi Upsilon Omega's major projects is to present area young ladies to society by means of a formal Debutante Cotillion. This fundraiser helps to defray the cost of community projects, area scholarships, and debutante scholarships. To date, Xi Upsilon Omega has presented twelve cotillion balls.
Ninety-seven percent of the debutantes presented have entered colleges and universities in pursuit of baccalaureate degrees. The sorority delights in acknowledging their awards and accomplishments.
The goals of the Cotillion have been to promote scholarship and prepare young ladies in the social graces and cultural acumen.
